South Beach, Newport & Beyond

A three-minute walk (or one-minute drive) from Second Story takes you to the private Surfland beach access, with its miles of flat, sandy beach and dramatic cliffs. Just over a mile walk north on the beach you reach South Beach State Park, which has paved, flat bike trails; winding wooded walking trails; and even an equestrian trail. The park also offers a playground, horseshoe pit and eighteen-hole Frisbee golf course. The park ends at the scenic South Beach Jetty, a great surf and fishing spot with views of the Yaquina Bay Bridge and Lighthouse.

Head south from the access point for miles of deserted beach. The beach is flat and great for bike riding at low tide. Take a six-mile ride to the Beaver Creek Natural Area with its five miles of trails, or just a bit further to Seal Rock, where waves splash dramatically onto large black rock formations. You might see a seal or sea lion frolicking nearby.

Though you may never want to leave Second Story, it’s just a four-mile drive to Newport’s Historic Bayfront and just a mile more to Historic Nye Beach. In addition to nearby mountain biking, kayaking, crabbing, and deep-sea fishing, other nearby attractions include the Oregon Coast Aquarium, Devils Punchbowl, and beautiful Yaquina Bay, Yaquina Bay Lighthouse and Yaquina Head Lighthouse. Whale watching from the house and nearby locations is superb.
